Spring is one of the happiest times of year as we emerge from the quiet introspective season of winter to the bright and sunny days of new growth and potential.
One of the biggest gifts of herbalism for me personally has been the never-ending and deepening spiral of falling in love with plants and the natural world again and again and again.
And spring flowers generously offer us that gift of intensely falling in love. Many spring flowers bloom brightly and radiantly, a welcome sight for our eyes and our hearts after a dormant winter. But, and this is an important but, they don’t bloom forever.
We call this the ephemeral.
Ephemeral beings demand presence. They don’t wait for us to find a convenient time or wait for our schedules to align. No flower says, "Oh, you’re busy this week, great, I’ll wait to bloom next week."
Flowers are on no one’s schedule but their own. My own spring season is showing that once again. While certain flowers often bloom around the same time, this year everything is later than normal. There’s futility in demanding to see my first dandelion bloom the same day as last year.
Nature shifts, changes, and moves on according to the deep rhythms of the earth, not the calendar we hang on the wall.
If we are narrowly focused on a to-do list filled with chores, errands and other shoulds, we could easily miss the beauty that is being offered around us.
With this fleeting essence of spring in mind I’ve created a Spring Flowers Recipe ebook to inspire you to spend time with this ephemeral beauty around us.
